2008 Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards made a brief Thursday afternoon appearance in downtown Charleston while in town for a private fundraiser.
The Associated Press was there (he was, after all, in the park outside the bureau's offices in the United Bank Building). Other media on hand included The Charleston Gazette, which also offers a photo, while West Virginia Media Holdings has video.

I was at the "private" fundraiser event at the Marriott, with a couple of hundred other people. There was no limit on what donation, if any, you made to get in. I had a college student with me who didn't make a donation. It was quite open and informal; I imagine anyone at the Mariott could have come in, and some did. Maybe there were some well-concealed security people there to enforce the "privateness" if something came up, a disruption, etc. Or those nosey reporters! I suppose when they call something private then the press are not allowed to come, and they give it short shrift. Edwards walked around the room for at least half hour before and after his talk, I'd say, talking with people, and spoke for 15-20 minutes. I've been to a number of presidential candidate events and this one seemed exceptionally open, uncontrolled, rather leisurely, and not brief from my perspective. And Edwards' speech and extraordinarily insightful message about what real security means for America reinforced my feelings that this guy deserves support, so he can get his message and candidacy out to the voters. He's pretty special.
