Fayette Senator Bowing Out in '08

State Sen. Shirley Love tells The Register-Herald of Beckley today that he will not seek a fourth term this year.

The Fayette County Democrat is a "a veteran southern West Virginia broadcaster who parlayed his popularity as host of a televised wrestling show into a successful political career," the article said.

Love, 74, has risen to chairman of the
Senate Confirmations Committee and co-chair of the Legislative Oversight Committee on Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority since then- Gov. Gaston Caperton appointed him to fill a legislative vacancy in 1994.

Love is the sixth state senator, and the third Democrat in that chamber, to opt against running for re-election in 2008. Half the 34-seat chamber is on the November ballot.

Poor ol' Shirley - he could cure cancer single-handedly and he would still be remembered as the host of "Saturday Night Wrestling".

Speaking of the Register-Herald, I find it odd that the co-owner of one of the largest rafting companies in the country gets sentenced for possession of 7 pounds of pot (a slap on the wrist) and not a peep about it from the Beckley paper. Hmmm.
