Study Estimates Cost of Single-Parent Families to W.Va.

A group called the Institute of American Values has released a report that suggests that "the breakdown of marriage is costing state taxpayers $231 million a year," MetroNews reports.

Jeremy Dys, executive director of the Family Policy Council of West Virginia, appeared on MetroNews' Talkline to tout the study, and to argue that it should "get the state involved in helping marriages last."

MetroNews also offers audio.

This is based on the article on this study found in the Tampa Bay Observer.

Scafidi's calculations were based on the assumption that households headed by a single female have relatively high poverty rates, leading to higher spending on welfare, health care, criminal justice and education for those raised in the disadvantaged homes. The $112 billion estimate includes the cost of federal, state and local government programs, and lost tax revenue at all levels of government.

Okay, so if you are a single woman (cause there are no single men raising children, right?) you are:

1) poor, and on welfare--whatever that means
2) in bad health
3) a criminal--or at least using lots of drugs and alcohol
4) wasting education dollars, somehow--maybe trying to stay on welfare, worsen your health, and engage in criminal behavior.

Really, yet another reason to not trust economists with essentially social issues. Any analysis with those assumptions is going to come to a certain st of conclusions, based on their starting point.
This is really insulting to single and divorced parents. I hope this propaganda doesn't go very far.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt, Mike. You can't just make up assumptions in these studies to suit your own purposes. You have to go with what the statistics say. The statistics indicate that there is a much higher incidence of poverty in single-parent households, etc.
