They Voted For You: Wilderness

U.S. Reps. Alan Mollohan, D-1st; Shelley Moore Capito, R-2nd; and Nick Rahall, D-3rd, helped pass the "Wild Monongahela Act: A National Legacy for West Virginia’s Special Places"on Tuesday.

Sent to the Senate on a 368-17 vote, the measure "would designate nearly 38,000 acres of new and expanded wilderness areas in the Monongahela," The Charleston Gazette reports. The article also notes that Tuesday's measure "does not include another new wilderness area, Cheat Mountain," which had been in the original bill.

Let’s Ensure Further Public Lands Remain ‘Wild and Wonderful’

This is a major step toward protecting some of West Virginia’s most ecologically unique PUBLIC LANDS. However, it’s worth noting that the current bill fails to include Seneca Creek, East Fork of Greenbrier, and the majority of Roaring Plains.

Wilderness designation will ensure these lands remain available for hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, etc. To readers who appreciate conservation, realize you can influence the Wild Monongahela Act (S. 2581) by expressing your support for inclusion of the above areas to Senators Byrd and Rockefeller, as the measure is now in their chamber.
