The Charleston Gazette has news of the death of Tom Searls, a veteran, award-winning reporter and one of its Capitol correspondents.
Searls, 54, had also covered the Tennessee statehouse. A Marshall University graduate, he had been student body president there.
"He loved politics and the factional conniving that occur behind the scenes," Gazette Editor Jim Haught said. "He was cynical but eminently likeable."
Update: The Gazette has an obituary.

Rest in peace, Searls. You were one of the good guys.
some have depicted tom as "gruff" and "hard-nosed," but that goes with the territory. i knew the other side of tom -- a kind, caring, compassionate and thoughtful individual and, he was a terrific storyteller. the capitol press room won't be the same without him. farewell, old friend and fellow unipresser.

Tom was everything a reporter should be and more. He was fair and honest, even when the topic was one about which he was personally passionate. A true journalist, he will be missed.
Virginia
I had known Tom since our days together at Marshall and his wit, honesty and passion came through in every part of his life. He made no pretense to who he was or what he was about - what you saw was what you got.
I am grateful for having known him and for having shared a few laughs and more than a few beers. Tom is one of the people who made the journey of life for many of us more interesting, informed, enlightened and downright fun.
Tom will be remembered as a great journalist, West Virginian and friend. While saddened by his passing I will carry the memory of his laugh with me. So long Tom, you will be missed.
