“You’ll win the election.”
-- U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill. and chairman of the Democratic Congressional Caucus, to state Sen. John Unger, D-Berkeley, while urging Unger to challenge Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-2nd, in 2008, as quoted by Hoppy Kercheval of MetroNews.

Unger would have a great shot. The Democratic wave to ride in 2008, be it with Clinton, Obama, or anyone else, will dwarf the 2006 momentum.
Plus, Capito's had truly ineffective opposition each time she's run. Humphreys was a dull trial lawyer with no real qualifications or story. Erik Wells had no money and no experience. Callaghan had potential but unfortunately got sidetracked by personal issues.
Unger is personable, works incredibly hard and has a proven record of working on issues people care about, including health care and the environment. With national Democratic support (that none of Capito's previous opponents had), Unger could raise a real threat in 2008.
It's unlikely Unger will get the national support referred to above. Capito is very personally popular and frankly, Unger's weaknesses will show with the pressure of a federal campaign. He does not have a thick skin and overreacts to criticism or challenge.
The national Dems want races they can win, not longshots-Capito did too well in a bad Republican year to be considered an easy target.
