The Push for "Clean Coal" Hits a Snag

A publicly owned company trying to build power plant in southern West Virginia fueled by coal waste "missed a $100,000 payment on a $4.87 million bank loan earlier this month," The Associated Press reports.

AP Business Writer Tim Huber found that Western Greenbrier Co-Generation could have gained more time to refinance its $4.87 million loan with First National Bank of Ronceverte, had it made the payment, and that "negotiations to refinance the loan with another bank also fell through."

"Western Greenbrier is trying to build a 98 megawatt electric plant in Rainelle. The plant would serve as a demonstration project by using coal waste, or gob, for fuel<" Huber writes. "It also would make cement from coal ash and other waste, and provide heat to nearby businesses."

Western Greenbrier is owned by the Greenbrier County cities of Rainelle, Quinwood and Rupert, AP notes.

The coverage of this proposal has been a little bit unbalanced, one might say. An AP lede on the plant recently used the term "clean coal" without quotes, which is buying into an industry frame/meme. Does the plant have the technology to capture CO2 emissions, the most dangerous ones, according to 3000 international scientists? If not, it's hardly "clean". The "gob clean-up" will probably leave a bigger mess than just leaving it alone, and I suspect that no law will require them to burn only gob. Journalists, let's have more skepticism and less boosterism on this project. Anytime we see this kind of subsidy we should suspect some sort of scam, and investigate that thoroughly.

CO2 is not only clean, but green. Plants need it to grow. We put it into the atmosphere each time we exhale. Does that make humans unclean as well?

Huh? Haven't they been doing this using Lummus furnaces over in eastern PA for the past 25 years?
Typical coal industry bs. Like getting gov't subsidies for spraying coal with kerosene. These crooks come up with all sorts of scams and the gov't provides them with free cash out of our pockets.
