Quote of the Day

"I understand that these plants require a lot of water, and would need to be along one of our rivers. Perhaps we should build one on the Kanawha [River], maybe right next door to the state Capitol.''

-- Don Garvin of the West Virginia Environmental Council, reacting to The Associated Press regarding proposed legislation that would repeal the partial ban on in-state nuclear power won by his group in 1996.

Short sightedness on the part of Mr.Garvin. Nuclear power is a vital part of the European power grid. With the continued pressure to drastically reduce carbon based fossil fuels the need to utilize all sources of power should be considered.

Solar and wind are decades from providing the quantity of power necessary for American homes and business. Nuclear energy is a proven technology, does not promote air pollution, and has a proven safety record.

No, Russia's Chernoyble reactor was not equiped with state of the art American technology...and Three Mile Island...in it's over wraught and exagerated reporting at the time ,on reflection was a mild "burp" into the atmosphere.

Numerous scientific studies of it's effect have determined no, repeat no...long term impact on humans or environment.

Of course, West Virginia and it's long reliance on coal combined with the political class and special interests which benefit from coal (bought politicians, coal producers and labor) will fight "tooth and tong" to keep nuclear power out of WV.

Perhaps we will see the day when the "in the pocket" politicians, coal companies, unions, and Mr. Garvin's West Virginia Environmental Council, join hands and sing Kum-bay-yah as the residents of West Virginia pay the price...environmentally and financially.
